The Overwatch League (OWL) held its Countdown Cup this weekend, and it was full of exciting matches. While the end results weren’t overly shocking, the games themselves were fun to watch. Here’s what happened, in case you missed any of it.
The North America OWL Countdown Cup Bracket
The North America Bracket saw 12 different teams trying to play for the top spot and $50,000 in prize money. This bracket was very predictable, with only two upsets through 11 matches over the weekend. One of the upsets saw a 9-seed beating an 8-seed and the other upset was the Philadelphia Fusion (3-seed) beating the Paris Eternal (2-seed), neither of which were overly surprising.
The San Francisco Shock swept their way past the Dallas Fuel and beat the Florida Mayhem 3-1 to advance to the finals. The Philadelphia Fusion swept the Los Angeles Gladiators and beat the Paris Eternal 3-1 to make it through the bottom half of the bracket.
The finals between Philly and San Francisco started off 2-2 with Philly winning the first and fourth maps and San Francisco winning the second and third maps. After this, however, San Francisco won the next two to take the series 4-2 to take the Countdown Cup.
The OWL Countdown Cup Asia Bracket
The Asia Bracket of the Countdown Cup had a few upsets as well but was also pretty predictable. Of the seven teams in Asia, the Shanghai Dragons were the clear favorites to win and they didn’t disappoint. They swept the New York Excelsior to reach the finals after New York pulled off a 3-2 victory against the Guangzhou Charge.
In the finals, Shanghai went up against the 3-seed Hangzhou Spark and swept them 4-0 in the best-of-seven. They won the Asia Bracket of the Countdown Cup without losing a single map.
The OWL resumes next weekend for its final weeks of play before the 2020 season playoffs which begin September 3.
