Activision Blizzard has announced three new organizations to join the upcoming franchised 2020 Call of Duty League. One of the franchises will be based in Seattle, Washington. This franchise slot was purchased by the Aquilini Group and Enthusiast Gaming, which is partnered with Luminosity Gaming. Aquilini also owns the Overwatch League franchise Vancouver Titans. The other two franchise slots were bought by NRG Esports for Chicago, Illinois and ReKTGlobal for London, United Kingdom.

Seattle Call of Duty

“Working in partnership with the Aquilini Group and Canucks Sports & Entertainment, we will build a competitive, first-class team that esports fans in the Pacific Northwest will be proud of,” said Steve Maida, the Esports President of Enthusiast Gaming. “With our experience in building successful teams with Luminosity Gaming and having been involved with Activision Blizzard with the Vancouver Titans since inception, we are excited to get started and develop a winning team and culture.”

The day-to-day operations and home games will be based in Seattle, Washington. It will be overseen by the Aquilini Group and Canucks Sports & Entertainment. Enthusiast Gaming will manage the team and player procurement using its wholly-owned subsidiary, Luminosity Gaming. This will be through a long-term management services agreement with the majority owner.

“Esports has shown extraordinary growth and we’re excited to continue to be at the forefront with a new Call of Duty esports franchise. We are thrilled with the performance of the Vancouver Titans in the Overwatch League in their inaugural season, and with the continued support and expertise of our partners at Luminosity and Enthusiast Gaming, we believe the new Call of Duty esports league is also well-positioned for success,” said Francesco Aquilini, Managing Director of the Aquilini Group.

“Along with the Titans, we look forward to continuing our engagement with the esports community in the Pacific Northwest with this new Seattle-based Call of Duty franchise, and delivering on our goal to create first-class fan experiences.”

London Call of Duty

“On behalf of the entire ReKTGlobal organization, we are thrilled that we’ve landed the London team for Call of Duty,” said Amish Shah, founder of ReKTGlobal. “My co-founder, Dave Bialek, and I feel that some of the most enthusiastic esports fans are based in London and we are not only excited but welcome the challenge to represent the city, while gaining larger visibility and growing our brand within the UK.”

ReKTGlobal is known for its ownership of esports organization Rogue. Rogue joined the European League of Legends scene in the 2019 LEC Spring Split, where they ended in dead last. They have since rebounded in the Summer Split. The organization also participates in the Poland Ultraliga, where it placed 1st in 2019.

Chicago Call of Duty

“NRG has loved Call of Duty and the competitive pro and amateur scene for a long time now,” said Andy Miller, the Chief Executive Officer of NRG. “The formation of the new Call of Duty esports league provided the perfect opportunity for the org to jump in. The prospect of having Chicago written across our team’s chests was the icing on the cake. We hope to transfer our winning formula from the San Francisco Shock of the Overwatch League to the new Call of Duty esports league and our Chicago team.”

NRG has a similar long history as an esports organization. In addition to owning the San Francisco Shock along, the organization boasts numerous achievements in Rocket League and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The three new Call of Duty franchises join teams in Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Paris, Toronto, Minnesota, Florida, and the two Los Angeles franchises. All 12 teams will host home games when the Call of Duty League begins in February of 2020. However, there are 10 North American cities and only two European cities, which may make travel difficult.
