This weekend was packed to the gills with some excellent StarCraft II action. The top 16 players in the world gathered in Burbank, California to figure out who will go on to BlizzCon this weekend. Only the top two players of each group (shown in green below) will move on to the Round of Eight on the big stage.

Group Stage results

Group A went down as most people expected. Maru and TY dominated GSL season 3 just a few months ago with first and second place finishes respectively. They rode this momentum into this weekend and will go on into BlizzCon.

Group B was much closer. Serral walked away with a flawless 4-0 map score, but second place was hotly contested. In the end, sOs knocked out Zest with a 2-1 victory in the final series of Group B.

Group C was oddly similar. Stats also got through the weekend without dropping a single map, securing first place. Dark and ShoWTimE fought tooth and nail for second place. Both players traded solid 2-0 victories, but unfortunately, ShoWTime dropped two additional maps to Stats. These losses ultimately gave him an inferior map score to Dark, who will go on to BlizzCon next weekend.

Group D was a bit more surprising. Rogue, the defending champion of the 2017 StarCraft II WCS Global Finals, will get a chance to defend his title next weekend after a solid 4-1 map score in the group. However, SpeCial shocked everyone by knocking Classic out of the running with a 2-0 victory. The Mexican Terran even took a map off of Stats on his way to second place.

BlizzCon bracket revealed!

With the group stages complete, we finally have the official bracket for the playoffs at BlizzCon. As everyone hoped, Maru and Serral are on opposite sides of the bracket. This means there’s a chance we will get the Maru vs. Serral Grand Final we all want. It’s also worth noting that there is a perfect racial split this year. Kudos to the StarCraft II balance team! I can’t wait for all the great games that lie ahead.
