During the official broadcast of Smash Summit 11, another big Super Smash Bros. Tournament was announced. The long standing smash major event Genesis is back. The long running Smash major will start on Jan. 28, 2022.

Genesis 8 will be held on the weekend of January 28 through 30. The three-day event will take place in San Jose and will be held at the same venue as last instalment of the Genesis tournament series. The SJ McEnery Convention Center will play host to the “World’s largest grassroots smash event” and will feature tournaments for Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Super Smash Bros. 64. On top of that, the event will also feature Rivals of Aether. As Genesis 7 was one of the last major smash in-person smash tournaments before the COVID-19 pandemic began, Genesis 8 will be one of the first in-person smash majors in nearly two years.

The Genesis tournament series has been a pillar in the Smash Bros. scene since its inception. Also it’s one of the most prestigious smash events in the world. Players from across the globe travel to Northern California every year to compete at this event. The event has also become famous in recent years for having its top 8 bracket for each event played in the historic San Jose Civic theater. The top 8 venue is also back this year.

As of the publishing of this article, nearly 300 players have already signed up for the Smash Ultimate event. Nearly 150 have already signed up for Melee within 30 minutes of the official announcement. Many notable players have already committed to going to event.
