T1 entering Overwatch Contenders
Formerly known as SK Telecom T1, T1 is a joint venture that was founded by SK Telecom and Comcast Spectacor. Comcast Spectacor also owns the Overwatch League franchise Philadelphia Fusion. With this news, the former Fusion University slot will be replaced by the T1 Overwatch Contenders Korea team.
After continued success in the North American Overwatch Contenders scene, Fusion University moved to Korea’s Overwatch Contenders region for the later part of 2019. Unfortunately, the team failed to repeat their previous achievements in the new environment. The roster ended Season 2 in 5 – 6th place with 3 wins and 4 losses, after tying with GC Busan WAVE.
However, even if the team’s structure is already based abroad, all of the coaches and players for the former Fusion academy roster have been let go. T1 will construct its Contenders organization from the ground up. Some players have since signed with teams of the Overwatch League. Kyung-bo “Alarm” Kim has gone to the Fusion, Se-won “BERNAR” Shin and Kim “Fuze” Tae-hoon to the London Spitfire, and Adam “Beasthalo” Denton to the Toronto Defiant.
The Korean Overwatch Contenders season consists of eight teams competing in a round-robin format. The top six teams will qualify for the Playoffs, with the top two teams directly advancing to the Semifinals while teams three to six head to the Quarterfinals. Each season in 2019 had a $200,000 prize pool spread among the competing teams. The top two teams in Season 1 also earned a spot at Overwatch Contenders’ Pacific Showdown tournament.
