Team BDS has taken first place in the first RLCS Season X European Regional event by defeating Top Blokes (formerly Veloce) 4-2. They claimed a good chunk of points towards the world championships and some nice pocket money of $30,000.
It was the first RLCS event since the overhaul and immediately proved successful, exciting, and refreshing. New faces in the scene showed the established pros that their thrones should not be taken for granted. It also meant the first-ever major win for a Spanish player.

RLCSX is chock full of upsets
Team BDS’s win is not the only unexpected outcome. The entire tournament has been one with surprises and upsets. Not only are Team BDS fresh debutants in the RLCS after coming first in the lower division of RLRS last season, but established teams such as Team Liquid and Oxygen were eliminated in Stage 1.
Even Stage 2 proved too much for some of the veterans; FC Barcelona and Endpoint bit the dust among the final 16 teams. Meanwhile, RLCS veteran and former world champion Marius “gReazymeister” Ranheim came out of a short-lived retirement to team up with two relatively unknown players in Sergio “AtomiK” Pérez Cortés and Raúl “DmentZa” Palazuelos. The trio went on to reach top four, beating the likes of Oxygen, Team BDS, and Guild Esports.
Week one of The Grid
Alongside the first EU Regional was The Grid. In the weekly $10K tournament that also awards a wildcard spot for the Fall Split Major, the underdogs once again proved victorious. Triple Trouble, who ended in sixth place of the RLRS last season, took first place, showing the world they’re not down and out yet.
Across the pond, The Grid was the first showing for North America for RLCSX, and things went a little less crazy over there. SpaceStation Gaming took first place over runners-up Team Envy and look good going into next week.
North America coming up next
The RLCSX EU Regional 1 was just the first of many events before the world championship. Next week, it’s North America’s turn to crown its first victor. With so many new players getting a chance to prove themselves against the big dogs, it’s looking to be an exciting season indeed.
Of course, the EU will also still be in action as The Grid continues every week on Thursdays and Fridays. The main RLCS event will follow on the weekends.
