With the Call of Duty League launching in 2020, the traditional Call of Duty tournament will take a backseat. While there will still be Open tournaments held for amateur and Path To Pro teams, it won’t have the same feel as a CWL event. However, Team Envy owner Mike “Hastr0” Rufail has teased the possibility of bringing this type of event back in 2020. Though it won’t be anything official for the CDL, it would still feature a prize pool, casters, etc. Nothing is set in stone, but this is something the entire community can get behind.

Hastr0 throwing a Call of Duty tournament?

The Call of Duty League is set to begin Jan 24, with the launch weekend in Minnesota. While the league is a monumental step for Call of Duty esports, many fans will miss the traditional events that Major League Gaming and UMG put on.

There have certainly been events that try to capture those tournament’s magic. For example, Davis “Hitch” Edwards and Team Summertime threw a Black Ops 2 throwback tournament at the Esports Arena in Arlington, Texas a few months back.

The fans have shown these tournaments still have a place in the community. Team Envy owner Hastr0 obviously sees this as well.

This obviously sparked interest from fans and players across the gaming community. A tournament thrown by someone as experienced as Hastr0 with that substantial of a prize pool is bound to attract tons of interest.

Assuming this event comes to fruition, it will take some time to put together. However, Hastr0 could use the Dallas Empire’s home venue for the event, eliminating that part of the process. The only roadblock would be trying to formulate a bracket and making sure teams show up.

If there’s one thing Call of Duty needs, it’s more attention. Since Activision believes the Call of Duty League will be around for at least a decade, the more interest the esport piques, the better.
