After an update to Psyonix’s PsyNet services earlier in the week, Rocket League has been facing many issues. Players were unable to connect over nearly the entire weekend, the game was put into maintenance mode several times, and even the first week of RLCS League Play had to be postponed to a later date.

The reason for the outages in Rocket League

The quality of the Rocket League servers has always been a hot topic, but this week it rose to new levels when Psyonix put the game into a brief maintenance mode in order to upgrade PsyNet — their service that adressess putting players into games, updating XP after a match, challenges, and the Item Shop, among other things. While the initial maintenance mode and upgrade caused fans to be hopeful, they soon faced an ugly truth when the connection became even more unstable than usual.

It’s curious they decided to upgrade these services just two days before their premier professional Rocket League tournament began when they had over a month to do it since the last world championships. As a result, the RLCS matches of week one are now postponed to a later date, which is still to be determined.

RLCS, RLRS, and play-ins postponed

It’s not just the RLCS that is postponed either. Throughout this weekend, while the RLCS was being played, the top 128 of up-and-coming teams were to battle it out in the Rival Series play-ins to determine who would compete in the RLRS starting next week on Feb. 7. While Psyonix was scrambling to get Rocket League working before the first match of the RLCS, these bubble players were already unable to play their matches and simply had to wait and see if they got to compete at all this weekend.

Due to the outages, the RLRS has now also been postponed, with the play-ins having been set for Feb. 8 and 9. So far, there is no date for when the first week of the RLCS will be played, but the players have voiced their frustrations about living up to the moment and getting ready, only to be told that the league cannot take place yet.

Fans and players alike have been asking for an offline LAN-styled League Play as opposed to online. They believe Rocket League esports cannot rise to the next tier without it, and issues like this only reiterate their points once more.
