Tellstones: King’s Gambit is a new tabletop game from Riot Games

League of Legends‘ season 2020 is here, and with new seasons come updates and plenty of changes. Riot Games recently released a few videos outlining future changes in store for the popular MOBA. Most importantly, VP of IP and Entertainment Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street has details on their upcoming League of Legends-related exploits. From a new tabletop game, Tellstones: King’s Gambit, to “Tales of Runeterra,” which are “short videos” that will release later this year, fans are excited for what’s to come.

Success in traditional

One of Riot Games’ big upcoming projects is the development of Tellstones: King’s Gambit. Along with other new upcoming League of Legends third-party titles, Tellstones is a bit different than the rest. There’s less fighting and competition involved, and it’s more traditional. It is a two-to-four-player bluffing game based on the actual game played throughout Runeterra. This game is Riot’s second tabletop project, with the first being Mechs Vs. Minions.

What does the game feature?

This game will feature circular stones that kind of look like Demacian coins, and the game is set to contain “perfect information.” Not much else is known about the upcoming game. Interestingly enough, some fans were able to find a trademark seemingly pertaining to Tellstones filed back in August 2019. This gave people a hint that Riot was developing a board game as it was filed with pseudo name “RIOT TABLETOP.”

What else do we know about Tellstones?

Going back in time to Riot’s 10th anniversary event, they had added new tips to the loading screen. This also gave viewers an inside look as to what was coming up. One of the tips read, “King Santon of Demacia avoided civil war with a game of Tellstones, saving thousands of lives.” To get into more detail, Demacians are known to play their version of Tellstones to honor King Santon. Another tip reads, “The Dauntless Vanguard play their own version of Tellstones, and use it to settle disputes within the ranks.”

League of Legends Tellstones: King's Gambit tabletop game

Along with the development of this game, Riot has created a “Riot Tabletop” team to oversee this project and future tabletop projects. Based on the popularity of Mechs Vs. Minions, this game has a pretty good chance of succeeding.

Some official word on their upcoming title

Finally, Riot has also released an official news statement addressing Tellstones. They give insight as to why they’re deciding to move forward with this game and what their thinking process is:

Our first tabletop game was a huge, cooperative game loaded with miniatures and narrative content. Our second game is competitive, much smaller, and plays faster. They’re worlds apart, but united by the focus on player experience outlined above.

And that’s what we’re so excited about—multiplying player experience across the wide range of games you can play at a table with friends.

What do you think about their next big board game? Did you enjoy Mechs Vs. Minions?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and be sure to stay up to date with Daily Esports!
