Tweek wins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at Glitch 8 – Missingno

Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at Glitch 8 – Missingno in Laurel, Maryland on Jan. 19. It was his first A-tier tournament victory since Low Tier City 7 last July.

Tweek coasted into top 8 unopposed at this event. In round 2 pools, he earned 2-0 victories over Ralph “Ralphie” Laurea and Matthew “Bankai” Richards. Then in top 32, Tweek earned 3-0 victories over Chris “WaDi” Boston and Dillon “Dill” R.

In Winners Semis, Tweek faced off against and defeated Guillermo “Stroder” Martinez Jr. Notably, Tweek lost to Stroder the last time they played at Ultimate Nimbus in March. Tweek’s final opponent of Glitch 8 was Rasheen “Dark Wizzy” Rose. He narrowly defeated Dark Wizzy in Winners Finals, but dropped a set to him in Grand Finals. Nevertheless, Tweek won the second set of Grands in order to take the whole event.

Glitch 8 was an important victory for Tweek given his lackluster start to the year. He placed 25th at Let’s Make Big Moves earlier this month. There, he suffered upset losses to Jestise “MVD” Negron and Michael “Riddles” Kim.

Dark Wizzy’s run to 2nd place

The real star of Glitch 8 was Dark Wizzy, who had his best S-tier performance to date. Dark Wizzy actually had a relatively easy road to top 8, because William “Glutonny” Belaid dropped out of the event. Even so, he defeated solid players such as Zack “ZD” Darby and Griffin “Fatality” Miller.

Dark Wizzy’s legendary run truly began in top 8, where he defeated Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby 3-0. He barely lost a five-game set to Tweek in Winners Finals. However, Dark Wizzy got a second chance after beating reigning Glitch champion Eric “ESAM” Lew 3-1 in Losers Finals. Dark Wizzy earned an impressive 3-0 over Tweek in Grand Finals before losing their final set 3-1.

Other results from Glitch 8 – Missingno

Brian “Cosmos” Kalu made a strong run to 4th place at Glitch 8. Along the way, he defeated players such as Eric “Mr. E” Weber, Troy “Puppeh” Wells, and Dill. Interestingly, Cosmos used his Smash 4 main, Corrin, to reverse 3-0 Dabuz in Losers Quarters.

Despite being the No. 16 seed, Stroder reached top 8 on winners side at this tournament, ultimately finishing in 5th. To get there, he had to defeat Cosmos and No. 1 seed Enrique “Maister” Hernandez. Maister notably finished in 17th place, dropping his first ever set to Paris “Light” Ramirez in the losers bracket.

This event was among Mr. E’s strongest runs in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as he placed 7th. To advance into top 32, Mr. E defeated Chukwuemeka “Mekos” Anazia and Tarik Fayazi (who had just upset MVD). He also defeated Bankai, Fatality, and Light, the last of whom he had not defeated in four years.

Glitch 8 – Missingno was truly a breakout tournament for Dill, marking his best major tournament performance in Smash Ultimate. On his run to 7th place, Dill upset Nasir “BlazingPasta” Green, Light, Ricardo “Sinji” Mathison, and Raffi “Raffi-X” Azar.
