Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at Get On My Level 2019 (GOML 2019) on May 19.

With his signature Wario, Tweek won sets against Jonathan “Jw” Woldu, Elliot “Ally” Carroza-Oyarce, and Ezra “Samsora” Morris. He then met his Doubles partner Tyler “Marss” Martins in Winners Finals. After dropping two games to Marss, Tweek switched from Wario to Roy, a character he has reportedly been playing for less than a week. Tweek’s Roy not only pulled off the reverse 3-0 in Winners Finals, but it also enabled Tweek to beat Marss 3-1 in Grand Finals.

Though he won Saints Gaming Live a little over a week prior, GOML Smash Ultimate Singles marked Tweek’s first major tournament win since Frostbite 2019 in February. This may give him an edge over Leonardo “MkLeo” Perez, who is another contender for No. 1 in the world.

MkLeo himself has not won a major tournament since Smash Ultimate Summit in March. Heart of Battle in February was MkLeo’s last win that counts for rankings, since Smash Ultimate Summit will not be included for the Panda Global Rankings.

While these two are frontrunners for No. 1 on the PGR, others have emerged victorious at various major tournaments. Among these are 2GG: Prime Saga champion Shuto “Shuton” Moriya, Pound 2019 champion Ally, and Umebura Japan Major 2019 champion Takuto “kameme” Ono.

A look at the top 4

Marss made an impressive run to Winners Finals, beating Jason “ANTi” Bates, Jestise “MVD” Negron, MkLeo, and Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada. He also defeated Eric “ESAM” Lew in Losers Finals, playing Ike as opposed to his renowned Zero Suit Samus. Marss ultimately finished in 2nd, being double eliminated by Tweek.

ESAM’s run to 3rd in GOML Smash Ultimate Singles included wins over several difficult opponents. After his first loss to Nairo, ESAM eliminated Ally and Brian “Cosmos” Kalu. He then rematched Nairo in Losers Quarters, winning with a dominant 3-0. From there, ESAM overcame MkLeo before losing a close set to Marss in Losers Finals.

MkLeo’s 4th place finish was technically disappointing, given that he was the first seed at the tournament. However, MkLeo did rely heavily on Joker, Smash Ultimate’s most recently released fighter. As a result, he had one of the strongest international performances with Joker to date, boasting wins over Eric “Mr E” Weber, James “VoiD” Makekau-Tyson, James “Shoyo James” Wade, and Samsora.

Unexpected appearances

Though he was projected to make top 16, Shoyo James went the extra mile to earn a spot in top 8 of GOML Smash Ultimate Singles. He did so by defeating Larry “Larry Lurr” Holland, Cosmos, and Robert “Myran” Herrin.

Michael “Riddles” Kim was the local star at this Smash Bros. event. Riddles is a Toronto native who placed 13th at GOML 2019. After losing in pools to fellow Canadian Medardo “Venom” Lopez, Riddles went on a deep run through losers. Along the way, he took sets from players like ANTi and Mr E.
