French video game developer Ubisoft has acquired a majority stake in Kolibri Games. The Berlin-based mobile game studio agreed to give Ubisoft a 75% stake in their company. This agreement will strengthen Ubisoft’s overall game portfolio. It may also provide Kolibri with new opportunities for future game production.

Kolibri Games

Players know Kolibri Games for two very popular mobile games: Idle Miner Tycoon and Idle Factory Tycoon. Known as a leader in the mobile game industry, they are a relatively new company. As one of Germany’s top startups, Kolibri hopes to expand its projects and eventually develop more games.

Both titles are point-and-click games, but players are mostly interested in unlocking upgrades and buying resources. Ubisoft saw potential in their games and decided to broaden their interests.

Ubisoft speaks out

In an official statement, Ubisoft announces the acquisition. According to the statement, Idle Miner Tycoon has over 104 million players. They point out the company’s dedication, even with a small 100-person team. Executive Director of Ubisoft Mobile, Jean-Michel Detoc, recognizes the success of Kolibri’s two titles.

“We are delighted that this great talented team, recognized for the longevity of their flagship title, is joining Ubisoft.”

This is an interesting new step for the popular French game developer. The globally recognized company publishes titles such as Assassins Creed, Rainbow Six Siege, Just Dance, and more. This is the first time they have worked within the “idle” game genre.

Additionally, Ubisoft sees a big opportunity in mobile gaming since its popularity has been growing in the past year. Co-founder of Kolibri Games Daniel Stammler also highlighted the major opportunity this deal presents for their company.

“This marks a high point in the history of our young company and will enable us to expand our development.”

Over the next four years, Ubisoft plans to raise their stake to 100%.

With the mobile gaming industry soaring, we may see more of these partnerships soon. As Ubisoft looks to explore more opportunities, they may learn a thing or two about non-competitive mobile players.
