An HLTV report indicates Valve has plans to change the qualification process for the CSGO Major in fall of this year. The new system in place will not be affecting the Major in spring, ESL One Rio.
Direct invitations swapped out for ranking system
The format for invitations for CSGO Majors has been pretty much the same ever since ESL One Katowice in 2015. Some teams received direct invites; some lesser known teams or underdogs had to go through an open and then closed qualifier in their region. According to the report, Valve plans on introducing a ranking system this year ahead of the Major in fall, its location currently unannounced.
The new system to be introduced involves a ranking. The ranking of a team is determined by points gathered at three events, the first being the ESL One Rio Major. The other two events that serve as sources of points are currently unknown. It is known, however, that the events will be leading up to the fall Major, from Nov. 2 until Nov. 15.
The top eight teams from the ranking will go straight to the Legends stage at the Major. The next eight will come in as Challengers. The last eight teams will be qualifiers from the current Minor system from the four regions (Europe, North America, Oceania, Asia).
Interestingly enough, Valve has asked existing tournament organizers to propose venues for the two events prior to the CSGO Major in fall. Which tournaments will yield points has not been decided yet, but they may be existing ones or completely new.
Below are the requirements listed by Valve for the two aforementioned tournaments:
- The event will be between July and September.
- The event will result in a LAN portion with a minimum of 8 teams. The portion of the event preceding the LAN competition can be online or LAN.
- The event will include a minimum of 24 teams, of which 16 slots are available to teams by Major ranking, and 8 are selected by a process of the TO’s choosing.
- The event results will differentiate between the top 16 performing teams and the remaining teams.
- Initial seeding for the event will be done by Major ranking.
- Valve will match up to $250k in prize money.
